What is cold pressed juice?
Cold pressed juice is juice that has been extracted from fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices by means of pressing. Cold pressed has nothing to do with the temperature of the juice, it is to do with the method used to extract the juice from the juicing ingredients.
What ingredients can you put into a cold pressed juicer?
You can add hundreds of different types of ingredients to a cold pressed juicer.
The main ingredients categories are:
- Fruit
- Vegetables
- Nuts and Seeds
- Herbs
- Spices
Recipe ideas and combinations for cold press juice:
There are many flavour combinations that can be used when making juice with a cold pressed juicer.
With cold pressed juicing, fruits, vegetables, grasses including wheat grass, herbs including lavender and spices including turmeric and ginger can all easily be added to a cold press juicer to make juice.
It is more a question of how much are you prepared to experiment and let your imagination run wild with a large array of hundreds of ingredients as opposed to what are the specific narrowly defined
recipes ideas and combinations that you can choose from.
Good quality cold pressed juicers can also be used to make nut milks, so there are really no boundaries when it comes to mastering and perfecting the perfect juice if you
What are the different juicing methods available to make juice?
- Pressing including cold pressed juice
- Pulping more for pulpy fruits and purees and requires coking he fruits before piping it and then separating the crushed pulp from the kernel / seed and peel / skin.
- Rough Filtration
- Centrifugation
Pressing:
During the pressing method for making juice. The juice is extracted by pressing the fruits, vegetables and herbs.
Juice is pressed using a mechanical press.
Different juicers use different presses to produce juice. Depending on the type of press will determine whether or not juice is a cold pressed.
Cold pressed juice uses an auger to slowly crush and press juice from fruits and vegetables.
It does this at a very low rpm (revolutions per minute) and as such does not generate heat and is therefore known as cold pressed juicing method for making cold pressed juice.
Centrifugal Juicer:
Centrifugation also known as centrifugal juicers produce fresh juice quickly with rapidly rotating sharp blades to finely chop the fruit and vegetables. These types of juicers generally use a disc shaped grater or a cutting disc.
Extraction:
Extraction – Is the extraction of juice from fruits and vegetables into hot water.
There are multiple forms of extraction available including: Static extraction, counter flow extraction, one of extraction and multiple extraction methods.
Extraction is generally used for fruits that contain little to very low amounts of water within the fruit including fruits like red dates.
What are the main differences between two of the most popular forms of juicing namely centrifugal juicing and cold pressed juicing?
- Centrifugal juicers operate at high speed and produce juice quickly.
- Due to the speed that the blades rotate, the nutrients in the fruit and vegetables particularly water soluble vitamins which are not as stable can be destroyed as opposed to making juice with a cold pressed juicer.
- Higher temperatures can cause oxidation which damages sensitive vitamins and micronutrients.
- Resulting in reduced overall health benefits being provided by the juice.
- Centifugal juicers produce less yield, meaning that you get less juice from a centrifugal juicer as opposed to a cold pressed juicer.
- Juice is more watery than cold pressed juice.
- Cold pressed juice is more concentrated, thicker, with richer full bodied flavour and produces denser juice.
- Cold pressed juicers will press every last drop of liquid juice out of the fruit and vegetables.
Centrifugal juicers are not able to juice some fruits and vegetables.
Cold pressed juicers can be used to press juice from most fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices.
For example you can even add lavender herb to a cold pressed juicer when making juice, though you certainly could not do this when making juice from a centrifugal juicer.
To summarise the core pro’s and con’s of a cold pressed juicer are as follows:
The Pros:
- No heat generation, therefore no oxidation of the juice
- Higher amounts of micronutrients and enzymes retained
- Extracts a larger amount of juice from fruits and vegetables
- Ideal for leafy vegetables and pulpy fruits
- Longer shelf life
- Operates silently without creating excessive amounts of noise
The Cons:
- Slightly longer time to extract juice from fruits and vegetables
- Weighs more than a centrifugal juicer
- Costs more than a centrifugal juicer
- Produces a larger amount of pulp when juicing
What ingredients are not suitable for juicing?
- Hard, large seeds and bits like apricot, cherry and peach kernels, avocado pits etc as these will damage the juicer.
- Very fibrous vegetables and grasses.
- Wheat grass can be juiced using a good quality cold pressed juicer.
- Very hard vegetables such as carrots can be a problem in most juicers, though are totally fine when being juiced when using a good quality cold pressed juicer.
- Frozen fruits and vegetables.
- it is advisable to put frozen fruits and vegetables in a blender.
- Non edible parts of fruit and vegetables such as banana skin, or avocado skin.
- Coffee beans and spices.
- Spices are fine to add to good quality cold pressed juicers.
